The Kakua Educative Tree Seed Orchard (KETSO) derives its name from an agricultural project in Kakua chiefdom (Bo District) set up by one of the founders late father (Prince Hanson). The name KAKUA was maintained in memory of Prince Hanson and still ives forth in KETSO. Apart from Baoma village (Kakua chiefdom, Bo), feasibility projects have been held at Makombeh village (Port Loko), Portor Community (Freetown, Western Area Urban District), Mafofayah (Port Loko) and Sherbro Island (Bonthe District).
The demonstration plot and test site on Sherbro Island (poultry farm & King Jimmy)
The poultry farm is located on Sherbro Island on the outskirts of Bonthe town towards Bonthe Secondary school. This plot is two town lots large and at present has approximately 30 mahogany trees (khaya senegalensis). The trees were nursed in January 2004 and planted in June 2004. Another 60 trees are presently were nursed in September, however due to massive rainfall the developed in Portor (Western Area) in which is capable of nursing up to 4000 mahogany trees. In 2004, 250 seedlings were nursed these trees were transplanted to the test sites in communities up nursery got flooded and the seedlings destroyed. The remaining trees have been bedded to protect against wind and increase nutrient feeding of the roots. To ensure sustainability lettuce, cabbage, okra, tomatoes and cucumber have been planted between the line. These cash crops are doing extremely well and in particular lettuce is been transported to the mainland markets for sale.
In addition to the “poultry farm” a second test nursery of 60 mahogany trees was set up at King Jimmy (west part of Bonthe town). This is a test site used to determine growth rate of the trees in this particularly sand area. Due to lack of attention by the mainly fishing-minded local communities the “King Jimmy” plot was closed down and the seedlings transferred to “Poultry Farm”.
Towards the end of 2004 a termite hill was developed on the test plot. The effects on the trees will be closely studied. Due to logistical problems in reaching the island as well as problems in acquiring land, KETSO decided not to extend the test plots on Shebro island.
The Makombeh village demonstration plot
Makombeh is located in the TMS- chiefdom between Makeni and Port Loko. In July 2004, 220 nursed mahogany seedlings were planted at Makombeh, and another 200 were nursed. Two hundred and fifty castor bean crops were planted for short term income generation. The plot ( 8 acres) was surveyed and two bridges and a water well construction were planned. In 2006 the plantation was extended to 40 acres.
The Mafofayah village test plot
Mafofayah village (near Lunsar on the other side of the river) has shown interest in KETSO and will be approached for a test plot. No action was taken in 2004.
The Baoma village test plot
Baoma village (20 km north of Bo) was approached for a KETSO demonstration plot but no action was taken in 2004.
The Portor nursery
Experimental nursery tests were held in Freetown, due to the close proximity for regular visits.
