What is CarboTrack?
CarboTrack offers reliable tracking of CO2 compensation investments in tropical Sierra Leone, West Africa. Removal of greenhouse gasses like CO2 is achieved by planting and protecting trees that become sustainable tropical rain forests. Each tree has the potential to remove 1 ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. A unique feature of Carbo Track is that the planted trees serve the communities that live near them. It provides work for the tree planters, but also fruit, medicines, fertilizers and animal fodder. This guarantees protection of the trees and sustainable forests. The use of sustainable energy also leads to a climate neutral effect. For example, energy saving stoves reduce the cutting and burning of firewood which reduce CO2 emissions. Replacing generators that emit CO2 by solar panels and batteries also reduces the quantity of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
How does it work?
This page linke you to a table that shows typical CO2 emission levels by individuals and companies and what it costs to neutralize them. If you compensate, you receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and certificate that allows you to track the progress of tree planting on your behalf. We will place a video film with the trees planted for you on youtube. You will also get a site map and raster coordinates of the trees allowing personal verification of the work by visiting the site. For investments above € 20,000.- Carbo Track refunds direct air tickets from Brussels airport to Freetown Sierra Leone (6 hour flight) and provides 4 day accommodation costs for site monitoring.
Who produces CarboTrack?
Carbo Track is produced by the Kakua Educative Tree Seed Orchard (KETSO), the only dealer of carbon credits in the Mano River Union (Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea). KETSO also offers other services; Nursing tree seeds, Seed Bank Development, and Agro Forestry Training.
Ketso also engages in awareness raising campaigns and sustainable farming techniques.
Are there independent checks?
All projects are checked by an independent organization based on strict criteria. Additional guarantee is provided by registering CarboTrack certificates as carbon credits at the National Registrars Office and the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture.
Who is CarboTrack meant for?
Carbo Track is for individuals and organizations committed to compensate their greenhouse gas emissions. Your contribution does not only combat climate change, but also supports global awareness and job creation in Sierra Leone.
What does a CarboTrack credit cost?
One air trip of 10,000 km which is comparable to an average holiday trip for the average European emits approximately 1 ton of greenhouse gasses. One mature tree is needed in order to compensate for 1 ton CO2, which equals € 10.- (excluding VAT). Since Sierra Leone has an investment promotion act that allows tax free development of tree forests, no tax payment is required.
